2022 – Cover art for Scuderia Ferrari

Ferrari introduces Scuderia Ferrari cover artist, Bruno Letizia!

ABOUT THE “ART OF FORMULA 1” SERIES

First published in 2017, this series is dedicated to Scuderia Ferrari’s F1 Grand Prix cover art and the artists behind the work. It includes my interpretation of the cover, insights (did you know?) into a nugget of information about the grand prix location, some words from Ferrari (track info. etc.), informational links to artist’s sites, and other Art of Formula 1 series works.

DID YOU KNOW?

The thought process

I typically overthink these covers and have a limited time to do so as Ferrari usually releases the new cover the Wednesday before the grand prix and publication of The Art of Fomula 1 is the Saturday morning prior to the grand prix (allowing me two days). Although I reach out to the cover artists asking for an update on biographical information, photos and social media sites, I never ask the meaning behind the cover. After that, the game is a foot as I search for the hidden meaning, stories etc. This research often times takes me down a rabbit hole that I never suspected. In addition, I typically don’t have a followup discussion with the artist to ask if I hit the nail on the head with my interpretation (although this type of interview is planned for the future).

Solving the Mysteries of Cover Art

My method is finding the uniqueness of the cover in its relationship to the grand prix location. I look at the buildings, background, and surroundings, as well as any wording in the illustration (any of these may indicate a particular place, time in history or something more). Colors in art also have meaning. Color intensity, depth, and other colors that they are paired with, can change their meaning. So here is how I broke down this cover…

Sleuthing

First I looked at the basics. The first clue, typically the Abu Dhabi grand prix cover lists Yas Marina, not Yas Island…Second, I noticed that the colors are unusual and must represent something specific, is reflective of a specific style, or the artist is calling to one of his past works. The mauve pinks, mauves and violets are complementary to the greens, yellow greens, yellows on a color wheel. Additional questions I had were: Why was the circuit yellow and why was there a green grid? What was the significance of the green triangles? Lastly, what is the significance of the yellow ring/yellow empty circle at the top of the illustration?

Although there were multiple meanings or symbolism to all of these elements, some were overlapping.

Yellow Circle – infinite possibilities, rebirth, hope [1][2].

Triangle – In Buddhism the triangle is a symbol for enlightenment and access to higher knowledge through focused concentration and a lifestyle of living in equanimity [3] Green triangle is also seen in recycling

Green Grid – This may be referring to the GGI-OSOWOG initiative [4] or just the thought of swapping a country’s energy grid to renewable energy [5].

Yellow Road – Golden path or the path of virtue [6]

The Color Pink – Intense pinks create a sense of urgency [7]

The Color Mauve – It encourages intuition, spirituality, and compassion for others. [8]

The Color Violet – Wise, thoughtful, empathetic [9]

Yas Island – The sustainable city [10]

Conclusion

Based on the overlapping elements I deduced that Letizia’s illustration focuses on the Sustainable City Yas Island project in which Aldar Properties and Diamond Developers have been working on since the beginning of the year with projected construction of the fourth quarter of 2022. The design is to produce a fully sustainable community powered by renewable energy with “net-zero” emissions. Urgency of this project puts it on a 30 month completion schedule. Diamond Developers already tested their Sustainable City model in Dubai with some success. [11] Although on a smaller scale, the success of this project could lead to further development and design of “net-zero” communities in other countries. The Sustainable City would certainly be the rebith of the traditional city although it would require a significant rework of the current infrastructure of old and existing ones.
