The Woke Choke & ‘Cancel Culture’

In the height of cancel culture even art can be erased and Ferrari was side swiped. Powered by the Internet and social media, it only takes a few to give their own misguided spin on art to have it removed from history. What are the possible repercussions? Will the nudity of Michelangelo’s David be censored and considered pornagraphic? Will the stylistic rendering of the eyes and nose in Picasso’s Dora Maar Seated be interepreted as sadistic? Will the color palette be minimized to black and gray, and will food be cooked bland for sensitive stomachs?

Scuderia Ferrari Cover Art

After deep diving Scuderia Ferrari Cover Art for over the past seven years, this is what I have learned:

  1. The artists comissioned for cover art, are some of the most respected Italian illustrators in the world. They are professionals who work for top brands such as Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Disney and more. Many have classic educational backgrounds in their fields and produce work that have multiple layers and depth. These works include not only beauty but a story to tell.

  2. Scuderia Ferrari cover art typically includes a single formula 1 car and driver with the driver number alternating every other race. Additionally there is a work of art, architechture, or location that is significant and celebrated by the grand prix hosting country. This included piece awakens interest about the country in the hopes that the reader / viewer will further learn more about the artwork, country and culture.

  3. Scuderia Ferrari cover art is not only an honored tradition recognizing their team and brand but also brings awareness of the hosting country’s customs and ancient traditions. Over the years covers have showcased:

    • Budapest’s iconic Heroes’ Square
    • Mexico City and The Aztec deity, Quetzalcoatl
    • Mexico City and The Pyramid of the sun – Teotihuacan
    • Japan’s celebrated artist Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa
    • Singapore’s lion dance
    • The Netherland’s famed Kinderdijk windmills
    • London’s Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain
    • Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf
    • Saudi Arabia’s Hegra
    • The National Theatre of Bahrain

These are just some of the hand illustrated personal works previously covered by the artists.

  4. Over the past seven years these covers have inspired me to find and share even more history and culture about each country through my The Art of Formula 1 series.

Carlos Sainz blasts through the wet streets on the southeastern side of Piccadilly Circus with a view of the Silverstone Wing and Union Jack amidst the clouds in the background. Go for the win, Scuderia Ferrari!

MEET THE ARTIST – FEDERICO CARLO FERNIANI

My name is FEDERICO CARLO FERNIANI, I was born in Empoli, a city near Florence, in 1974 and am the youngest of four children. I started to draw at the most tender age finding and seeking continuous stimulus in my principal passions; books, comic strips, music, and movies.

After High school, I applied for admission to the Academy of Belle Arti in Florence but was not accepted because not technically prepared. Disappointed I began to study history and anthropology at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy in Florence in an attempt to realize another dream. During those years I continued to study art and attended the International School of Comics in Florence. In 1998 despite my passion for the university, thinking that it was not the right path and in need of work, I finally decided to test my fate by getting an interview in one of the most important studies of illustration in Florence, the Inklink studio. So began my career in the illustration world of fiction and non-fiction for the book industry and museums.

During those years I kept on attending, in the evening hours, schools of 2d and 3d graphics specializing in digital illustration. After almost ten years of working and hundreds of publications for a lot of European publishing houses and Italian museums of archaeology, in 2007 I felt the need for a more personal artistic road. In 2009 I signed a contract for my first French comic with Soleil, “Bravesland”, and it started my career in the world of comics. Currently, besides the comics, I continue my activity as an illustrator and graphic designer.

DID YOU KNOW?

Quetzalcoatl (feathered serpent) is an Aztec deity associated with the sun, wind, air, and learning.

Quetzalcoatl is made up of two parts. The first is the Quetzal which is a bird found in Mexico and in the United States near the southern border.

Quetzal

The second part is coatl, which means serpent.

The Temple of the Feathered Serpent is the third-largest pyramid at Teotihuacan (home to the Pyramid of the Sun, which is the largest). The pyramid of the sun was the showcase of last year’s Mexican Grand Prix Scuderia Ferrari cover art.
